Ojude Oba 2018: Cultural display of the Ijebus
Culture, they say, is the way of life and what differentiates one culture from another varies in language, dressing, belief, attitude, and many other factors. The Yoruba culture is one of the largest African cultures still actively in existence. The Yoruba people are not just a single group but rather diverse people bound together by common language, history, and culture. Yoruba mythology holds that all Yoruba people descended from Odua or Oduduwa. Kingship is an integral part of this culture because kings at the time are the sole ruler of their communities before the dusk of colonization.
Ojude Oba festival is one of the avenues where Yoruba culture is colourfully and elaborately showcased. With a large gathering at the Awujale’s palace arena, regberegbes (families) come in hundreds, dressed in similar elaborate traditional attires to celebrate the fact that they are alive to see another Ojude oba festival and in turn pay their homage and allegiance to their Awujale (King). The event involves colourful horse riding display and gun shooting to present each regberegbes while special dignitaries from all over the country come to witness the elaborate display of Yoruba culture and other amazing entertainment.

The gamers in attendance for King of the Pitch comprised of a mixture of champions who had competed before and beginners who decided to play their game. One of the gamers who didn’t qualify for the next round of the King of the pitch even after winning 2 out of 3 games played had this to say: “If I was playing with my friends, I would have beaten them hands down. Here, I was nervous because it was my first time playing FIFA to compete for a prize”.
FIFA 18 and PES were not the only games played at the King of the Pitch. Game lovers in attendance free played on Mortal Kombat XL and Dance Central. This gaming event gets even better with the presence of drinks; not just any drink but the Fearless Energy drink.

Ginchi was the flair gamer while Ology, his contender was more calculated and precise. Although both players enjoyed the highest number of victories by scoring the highest number of goals for the FIFA 18
competition, Ginchi eventually emerged victorious with a 4-1 win. The 3rd place match was won by laroni, a 15 year old kid but his age meant nothing as he handled his winnings and defeat maturely like any gamer should.
The 1st position for the game of PES at this event was clinched by Dynamic King, 2nd position, Ajibola while the 3rd position was taken by Afolabi. Fearless Gaming Mini Tournament (Naija Fighters Connect)
Before the age of the Nigerian millennial and our social media frenzy, there were teenagers and young adults of the 80s and the 90s, but more importantly was what held their attention as social media did not exist at the time – “Video Games”. That era had different platforms like the Sega mega drives, Nintendo and of course, most recently; Play Stations and the Xbox.
Globally, where smart and fun tech solutions in form of games and phones are concerned, the community of gamers worldwide is on the rise. With developers creating different kinds of games for different genres, there is high novelty for game consumers of every age and strata in the gaming industry. The need for this kind of leisure is why in different continents, events are organized for gamers to gather, share their passion and be a part of the gaming community whether online, at comic cons or at video game competitions. Gamers from all over Lagos had to brawl with their preferred fighter characters against the best gaming fighters for the Tekken and Street Fighter competitions.
The victors of the events won cash prizes, t-shirts, face caps and Fearless Energy drinks. One of the winners of the gamers with the code name “Duchess” had this to say about the caliber of players in the competition, “I am only here to have fun, but those guys in there are beasts”. The games had great strategy of game play and we witnessed how the top players showed massive skills which made the average players frustrated from beginning to the end of the game play. The Tekken competition winner defeated all contenders to keep his undefeated, seven years championship title.
